The creation of
a revitalised community, providing new homes and enhanced environments for
existing residents in the south of the city, has taken a major stride forward
today.
Eighty-one new
sustainable and energy-efficient homes for older people have gained planning
consent, part of Phase 1 of the Channel View regeneration masterplan that will
breathe new life into this area of Grangetown as well as increasing the supply
of much-needed affordable homes in the city.
Impressive
architecture, innovative, green infrastructure, a strong emphasis on
place-making and improving the local environment are key aspects of the first
phase of the redevelopment, which focuses on the replacement of the existing
high-rise council owned tower block for the existing council tenants.
Two new blocks
of flats will be built alongside the River Taff exploiting the area's fantastic
views across the bay, providing light and spacious accommodation for residents.
The larger block will be a Community Living scheme with a wide range of
communal facilities including a community café on the ground floor and activity
rooms. The smaller block will provide accommodation for independent living,
with access to the communal areas.
Cabinet Member
for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "Our plans for
Channel View will create a greener, more sustainable, more attractive
neighbourhood for people living in the area, with high quality community spaces
and better connectivity to public transport, shops and local facilities.
"Phase 1
will provide contemporary, sustainable, flexible new properties suitable for
people's changing needs as they age, to replace the existing block of flats. I
know that many of the tenants in the high rise are already impatient to move
into these new homes and they will be just as excited as me about today's good
news.
"This will
be just the first step in our exciting masterplan, the first piece of the
jigsaw, that over the coming years will come together to create a thriving,
desirable place to live in Grangetown,
with a good mix of private houses and apartments as well extra council
homes we need so much to help tackle growing pressures for good quality
affordable homes."
At today's
Planning committee, outline planning consent was also granted for the wider
redevelopment and extension of the Channel View estate that will almost double
the overall number of homes on the site.
More than 300
new apartments and houses are planned to replace the existing 184 properties in
later phases, as well as much-enhanced communal green spaces, play areas,
cyclepaths and footpaths and improved transport links.
