Building homes for the future

A vision for developingconnected communities and building homes for the future has been outlined in Cardiff Council's Housing Revenue Account (HRA) Business Plan for 2017/18.

The plan sets out the Council's aim of increasing the range and quality of housing available for people in the city as well as a focus on helping people to live independently in their own homes for longer.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "I am committed to delivering good quality housing for residents in Cardiff and it's wonderful to see that work is underway on two sites in our Cardiff Living scheme which will deliver around 600 new affordable homes across the city.

"We are ambitious and I'm delighted that, on top of this, additional funding has been set aside to provide a total of 1,000 new council homes over the next five years.

"Building new homes is only part of the picture though. We are also developing an acquisitions strategy and have also submitted an application to the Welsh Government to withdraw the Right to Buy in Cardiff, which I hope will safeguard our much needed housing provision for current and future generations."

Developing new and regenerated housing for older people is a key focus of the business plan as part of a joined-up, locality based-approach to providing care and support for people. The Council has been reviewing the suitability of its sheltered accommodation across the city and has begun modernising its stock to keep pace with tenants' needs and provide buildings that are fit for purpose.

Cllr Thorne added: "We know that everyone wants to remain healthy and independent throughout their lives and we want to help support residents to be able to continue living in their own homes for as long as possible with good quality, appropriate housing at the core."

The business plan details how the Council intends to achieve its objectives and set standards over the next year including maintaining the Welsh Housing Quality Standard, the delivery of estate regeneration works such as Maelfa in Llanedeyrn and the continued roll-out of the highly-successful community hubs programme.

Cllr Thorne said: "My aim is to ensure that Cardiff remains at the forefront of housing provision and this plan sets out how we will work towards achieving our goals and ambitions over the next year so that people in Cardiff increase their opportunity to access good quality housing to meet their housing need."

The HRA Business Plan will be considered by Cabinet at its next meeting on July 27.
