HELP MAKE MIDDLESBROUGH GREENER AND CLEANER

Community-minded volunteers are wanted for a litter pick.

Helpers are needed for a clean-up in the North Ormesby area on Thursday, December 2 from 1pm-3pm.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the North Ormesby Community Hub on Derwent Street.

Litter picking forms a valuable community-led part of Middlesbrough's effort to become a greener and cleaner town.

Last month Middlesbrough Council's Executiveagreed to spend £150,000 (£50,000 per year over three years) to boost recycling and improve behaviour towards littering, including providing support to ensure community groups and volunteers have the right training, guidance and equipment to safely carry out their activities.

Earlier in the year Middlesbrough Council also announced its green strategy which involves immediate action to make the town a leader in environmental issues within 12 months.

Approved schemes to improve the Middlesbrough environment in the 2021-22 financial year include:

  • Sewing 30,000m2 of wild flowers;
  • Planting 15,000 trees;
  • Installation of bee hives across Middlesbrough with a ‘Buzz in Boro' guide;
  • Purchase electric vehicles to replace fossil fuelled vehicles;
  • Designation of Lower Ormesby Beck as a nature reserve; and
  • Extra work to improve recycling rates.

Also in the plan is work to roll out climate change training to all council employees, work with business to reduce commercial waste and increase recycling and methods to measure and monitor the town's carbon output.
