You've mastered the habit of bringing reusable bags to the supermarket, you never leave the house without a reusable coffee cup, but you are stumped on how to make your new bathroom renovation as eco-friendly as possible. While it might seem like an impossible and costly task, there are a number of surprisingly simple and affordable solutions.

Steven Jaques, Pelipal National Development Manager for InHouse Inspired Room Design, says, "Today's bathroom must be beautiful, functional and crafted from top quality materials that are sustainable and long lasting. It is incredibly important that modern interior design puts environmental challenges at the fore and does everything possible to contribute to a green future."

LED Lighting

Opting for LED lighting is a brilliant way of making sure that your bathroom efficiently uses electricity and resources. Did you know that an LED light bulb uses just 10% of the energy required to produce the same amount of light as an equivalent incandescent bulb?[1]To top it all off, LED lighting contains no substances that are harmful to health, is highly versatile and available in a huge variety of designs.

The Solitaire 6010 double washbasin as pictured above with vanity unit and mirror cabinets features built in LED lights. It has an RRP that starts from £2,617.61 exc. VAT. Available from Pelipal's UK and Ireland network of retailers. For details, please contact InHouse Inspired Room Design at www.inhouseltd.co.uk or call 01434 400 070.

Mineral Composite Countertops

When it comes to countertops and bathroom washbasins, durability and beauty are non-negotiable. Countertops bear the brunt of everyday use from the whole family. Solid granite and stone are undeniably beautiful, but the extraction of these raw materials is often not sustainable. Solid granite is mined from quarries, usually in far-flung locations and requires powerful machinery to extract and cut the material.

Granite composites, on the other hand, are made from a blend of natural minerals and a low percentage of resins. This creates a highly durable, hygienic and resistant material that mimics the look of natural stone at a fraction of the environmental and financial price. . It is highly prized for its sustainability and non-porous surface that prevents bacteria and is widely used by architects and interior designers in kitchens and bathrooms.

The Solitaire 6010 Krion double washbasin (1330mm) as shown has an RRP that starts from £1,761.99 exc. VAT. Vanity unit below has an RRP from £1,179.50 99 exc. VAT.Available from Pelipal's UK and Ireland network of retailers. For details, please contact InHouse Inspired Room Design at www.inhouseltd.co.uk or call 01434 400 070.

Wood effect fronts

Longevity and resistance to humidity and water egress are fundamental for bathroom furniture design and selection. Equally, you want to be sure that you're making a sustainable choice. There are five key points[2]to consider when specifying an eco-friendly bathroom design.

1)   Are the materials going to last?Decorative surfaces such as wood effect finishes, or high gloss or matt finishes, have been engineered for bathroom use, ensuring that they can stand the test of time.

2)   Reducing use of raw materials.Composite materials use less wood fibre than real wood. They can also contain a high percentage of recycled materials - up to 95% of the wood fibre used in particleboard or MDF is left over from other furniture and lumber operations. Equally, they are lighter, easier to handle and allow for integrated wiring and lighting. All chipboard and MDF boards that Pelipal use are environmentally friendly and are significantly below the formaldehyde limit of 0.1 ppm (0.12 mg formaldehyde per m3/g air) permitted by the German Federal Health Office.

3)   Manufacturing efficiency.Reducing the manufacturing time saves energy and power. Equally, adding in installation efficiency and the durability of surfaces enhances sustainability.

4)   Substitution.Being able to substitute materials with lower environmental impact is an eco-friendly choice. There is no harvesting of walnut, cherry, oak, rosewood or zebrawood, protecting natural resources.

5)   Recovery.With modular bathroom furniture, individual items can be replaced if needed to revitalise the design. With Pelipal furniture, rigorous testing and continuous inspections ensures Pelipal's bathroom furniture is awarded the RAL quality market. This means the quality-tested furniture is sturdy, safe, durable and well-made - and does not contain any pathogenic components.
