12th September to 17th October

Judy Buxton | Garden Roses II

This autumn, New Craftsman Gallery St Ives presents a collection of twenty oil-on-canvas works by award winning painter Judy Buxton. Judy was born in Sydney in 1961 and is a Fine Art graduate of both Falmouth College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London. In 1995, she moved to the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, where she draws inspiration for her landscape paintings from the area's unique moorland, coast and river. Other subjects include shimmering, still life paintings of flowers, and dynamic equine paintings which reflect Judy's passion for her beloved horses. Deep texture, soft colours and the vigorous use of paint, applied predominantly with a palette knife, are the defining characteristics of her work. During her prestigious career, Judy has been awarded the David Murray Travel Scholarship and the Sir Cyril Sweet Prize, for which she received the honour of the Freedom of the City of London. Other prizes include the Royal Watercolour Prize, the First Prize Gold Medal from the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers, and The Hunting Art Prize. Her work can be found in many public and private collections including Swiss Bank, Richard Hannon Racing, Godolphin Stables and Falmouth University.

On show beside these works are ceramics by Matthew Chambers. Matthew is an MA graduate of the Royal College of Art and was awarded the Ceramic Review Prize at Ceramic Art London in 2006. Since that time, his complex ceramic structures, constructed on the wheel from individual layers of clay, have succeeded in pushing the boundaries of contemporary craft, making him one of the 21st century's most unique and collectable artists. This collection includes a new developmental series of highly polished, more minimal forms which combine both concave and convex inner layers of clay.
