NSA | Edge of Dark

Tremenheere Gallery | Cornwall

4 to 26 April 2020

Object of Desire | Marie Claire Hamon

This April at Tremenheere Gallery, the Newlyn Society of Artists present Edge of Dark, an exhibition exploring the role of ‘darkness' in society, art and culture. Historically, great artists such as Caravaggio, Goya, Munch and Hogarth have reflected literal and metaphorical ideas of darkness in their work, exploring subjects such as moral corruption, violence, war, angst and fear, to dramatic effect. Curated by collaborative artist Jesse Leroy Smith, this exhibition of new work includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations which explore ideas of ‘dark' in relation to the political and ecological uncertainty of our era, through colour, mark making, and emotive genres including Film Noir, Surrealism, Chiaroscuro and Tenebrism, where subjects are engulfed in shadow or dramatically illuminated by light.

Comprised of over 60 submissions by artists including Una D'Aragona, Gareth Edwards, Marie Claire Hamon, Andrew Litten, Ingrid Newton, Tim Ridley, Suzy Sharpe, Volker Stox, Ken Turner, Paula Whitbread-Roberts and many more, this show is the latest in a must-see programme of exhibitions by West Cornwall's historic NSA.

Editors Notes

Newlyn Society of Artists

Established in the late 19th century by an influential group of Landscape and Social Realist painters, the NSA exists today as a group of around 85 contemporary artists working within, or in relation to, West Cornwall, across a range of disciplines from painting and sculpture to performance and the moving image. The NSA is run by an annually elected committee and continues to seek new opportunities and welcome new membership applications. In 2017, the NSA began an exciting new partnership with Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, whose new, contemporary gallery space is now their new home, and the venue for twice yearly NSA exhibitions.
