Maritime Transport is set to enhance its container handling services across the North West after working with Cooper Specialised Handling to improve its heavy lifting capabilities in Manchester.

The UK's leading container transport company, Maritime has invested in a second SANY empty container handler, which will be put to work at its busy Trafford Park transport depot. The company introduced a SANY double box empty container handler, also supplied by Cooper Specialised Handling, at its Leeds depot in autumn 2016.

Operating the UK's largest container fleet and a network of 27 depots, Maritime specialises in providing road- and rail-based container transport services to global shipping lines, freight forwarders and cargo owners. Getting the materials handling solution right is important if Maritime is to deliver consistent, quality logistics solutions to its customers.

The new SANY machine has been purchased outright and joins a Manchester-based fleet that already comprises two empty container handlers. It has been custom painted in Maritime's distinctive livery and features a host of Valu+ options as standard, including air conditioning, 12 LED spotlights, reverse alarm, external electronic display showing machine data and electric tilting cabin for easy maintenance.

Reinforcing its long-term partnership with Cooper, Paul Heyhoe, Operations Director at Maritime Transport, said: "Our Leeds depot has seen a considerable uplift in productivity since the SANY machine went into service.

"Large volumes of traffic pass through our Manchester terminal on a daily basis so having a robust, reliable container handling capability is essential. This new SANY empty container handler is set to have a major impact on our business development plans in the North West."

Whilst capable of stacking up to seven containers high, Maritime will use the machine to stack up to five boxes in order to support its current operation. The single stacker SANY SDCY100K6G has the highest stability and ground clearance of any empty container handler on the market, providing a safe platform for any operation, even in the most challenging conditions. Maritime's machine has been specified with 14.00x24 tyres, rather than the conventional 12.00x24 tyres fitted to its existing equipment, which further improves ground clearance while also providing a more comfortable driving experience for the operator.

Cooper's servicing and maintenance division, Cooper Solutions, keeps Maritime's UK fleet of forklift trucks, reachstackers and empty container handlers working at peak performance. Its highly skilled engineers work with Maritime's depot managers to schedule all work with a view to reducing machine downtime and minimising disruption to the container handling operation.

Martin Dale, Sales and Customer Support Manager at Cooper Specialised Handling, said: "SANY has a reputation for manufacturing robust equipment that can withstand the toughest challenges and this new empty container handler will help to improve productivity at Maritime's Manchester terminal. For this particular application the machine's ride height is a key consideration because of the site's undulating ground conditions."
