HOW TO STOP STRESS IN ITS TRACKS & PREVENT BURNOUT THISINTERNATIONAL STRESS AWARENESS DAY

Independent Snapshot Survey on Stress and Burnout in Young UK Professionals finds 38% of young professionals are "highly self-critical" and one-third are burnt out or close to it...

London, United Kingdom, 24thOctober 2017: As a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and a Fellow of the International Stress Management Association, Susan Scott is well placed to provide expert advice this International Stress Awareness Day. Susan regularly runs workshops to coach Young Professionals in the UK. This passion to help others to maintain their health led Susan to Chair the board of Trustees of the International Stress Management Association (ISMAUK) for two years in 2013 and 2014 and she is also a successful author of the best-selling bookHow To Have An Outstanding Career(May 2017) andHow To Prevent Burnout(October 2017).

In her latest new book,How to Prevent Burnout, nutritionist and business psychologist Susan Scott considers the body's natural fight or flight adrenal response and examines a person's personal attitudes to how they behave and perform. It also explains how to regain balance and improve capacity, to cope better with work-life issues. Valuable case studies, questionnaires, practical exercises and tips guide readers to help them to take back control, regain full energy and ultimately thrive.

Each year, the team at (ISMAUK) run aStress Awareness dayon November 1st to focus on stress and stress prevention, and to promote the importance of wellbeing for individuals and organisations. Working life is increasingly complex and uncertain for all age groups. Employee stress and burnout are major challenges for employers and there is a lot more than can be done from within the organisation. Ultimately, however, it is the responsibility of the individual to take control of their health and wellbeing. So, how can individuals achieve a successful life and career without burning out?

As both a business psychologist (qualified in behaviour in the workplace) and a nutritionist (health and lifestyle distinction, via the Institute for Optimum Nutrition), Susan Scott advocates a holistic 'mind and body' perspective. "Susan brings her substantial professional expertise to the physical and mental strains which feel increasingly common in modern life, with a welcome focus on practical advice and support for young people making their way in the world." says Rt. Hon. Jeremy Hunt, MP and Secretary of State for Health.

Excessive demands and pressures in the workplace mean people are stuck with being ‘always on'. InHow to Prevent Burnout, Susan describes the Burnout Attitude Model (composed of seven different attitudes). Each attitude stimulates a stress response, contributing to burnout it its own way.

What is burnout?

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion which leaves you feeling at rock bottom, alone and unable to cope. Susan believes passionately that everyone, but in particular, the Young Professional, deserves to work in ways that foster their resilience, performance and career. The risk of burnout is especially high for young professionals aged 21-35, as they push themselves physically and mentally to keep their edge in the competitive workplace.

Susan ran an online Snapshot Survey to understand why young professionals (often presumed to be robust and healthy) are struggling to cope - and what they do to manage it. A report on the results is available upon request.

Key findings fromthe survey:‘Stressed, Exhausted and Burning Out - should we really be treating our future talent like this?'*included:

  • Of the 127 respondents, almost half (46%) have taken at least one day off from work due to stress in the past two years. And whilst most took no more than five, 20 (16%) have taken six or more days off due to stress.

  • 39% scored themselves at a level which suggests they see themselves as ‘I'm burnt out' or very close to it.

  • The greatest concerns are ‘work demands and pressures', ‘money worries' and ‘health worries'.

  • The top three signs of stress (in order) are: difficulty sleeping; irritable; lacking energy and feeling exhausted.

  • Sadly, 41% feel they get little or no support from their managers.

  • The most common attitude was ‘highly self-critical', with 38% identifying it as the attitude that most describes themselves. In the How To Prevent Burnout book, this is described as an ‘Inner Critic'. Inner Critics have a self-defeating voice inside their heads that judges and criticises all aspects of how they think and behave, leaving them with a sense that they are not good enough.

How to Prevent Burnout offers the tools to create a more balanced life, understand individual stress triggers, achieve a quieter mind and enhance health and adrenals with improved diet and lifestyle. Feel yourself again and have the energy to achieve your dreams!

Which of the following (if any) Burnout attitudes most describes you?

Control Freaksare people with a strong desire to exert control over people and situations. They believe that things should be done right and perfectly and only they know how to achieve this.

Negative Thinkershave a subconscious, irrational thought process that looks to the bad and discounts the good.

Inner Criticshave a self-defeating voice inside their heads that judges and criticises all aspects of how they think and behave, leaving them with a sense that they are not good enough.

Social Isolatorsbelieve that the only way to get the job done is to separate themselves as much as possible from colleagues, family and close friends.

People Pleasershave an attitude that there will be consequences if they say ‘No' to someone's request for assistance.
