Citizen's rights are set to be one of the main topics of conversation as the second round of Brexit negotiations get underway this week.

Last month the UK Government published proposals to guarantee the rights of UK citizens in the UK, however the offer was dismissed by European Council President Donald Tusk as "below our expectations".

A 2015 report from the Office Of National Statistics estimated the number of EU born citizens living in the UK at 3,325,000, while a UN report the same year put the number of UK born citizens in the EU at 1,217,500.

Jan Meeuwesen, owner of the Crazy Tourist, collected data from the reports to create an interactive map showing:

  • The number of citizens from each EU country living in the UK

  • The number of British expats living in each EU country

  • The net migration figure to the UK for each EU country

Commenting on his findings, Jan stated "There were only 4 countries where the number of British expats outnumbered those living in the UK - Cyprus, France, Luxembourg and Spain. We also discovered that over 25% of EU citizens living in the UK are from Poland."

Jan also explained why he decided to create the map:

"We have received a lot of emails from Crazy Tourist members who are either EU citizens resident in the UK, or have family members in the UK, and they are very concerned about their future. It seems to many that their lives are being used as political bargaining chips, and the recent proposals from UK Government haven't done much to assuage fears."

"We have heard varying figures about how many EU citizens are in the UK - and vice versa - so we wanted to get a clear picture on the current situation. We also felt that a map was the simplest way to display our findings."

The interactive map can be foundon the Crazy Tourist's website.
