'Escapade' | watercolour | Ralph Freeman

This collaborative father and daughter exhibition, on show from 21 October to 18 November at New Craftsman Gallery, St Ives, features sculptures, etchings, watercolours and works on paper which present two views of the natural world, one in monochrome and the other in colour, one exploring the intricacies and complexities of organic form, the other exploring the broader concept of landscape.

Respected artist and musician Ralph Freeman studied at St Martin's and the Harrow School of Art from 1961 to 1965. He was later elected to the Newlyn and the Penwith Societies of Artists, was awarded an Arts Council tenancy at St Ives' prestigious Porthmeor Studios, and as a composer and jazz pianist, formed the award-winning St Ives Jazz Club in 1998. This new collection of work was created in Provence, France, and reworked at his London studio, and uses the artists' musical and aesthetic influences with the immediacy of watercolour to respond to aspects of the landscape.

Rising new talent Alice Freeman spent her childhood in and around the creative environment of her father's studio on Porthmeor Beach, later studying at Camberwell University of Arts and at the Sienna Art Institute in Italy. Her work focuses primarily on what she calls ‘the dark edge of beauty'. Through both sculpture and exquisitely detailed metal plate etchings, she explores the textural qualities of natural and biological forms, with a focus on repetition, texture and mark making, creating works which are as much about the phenomenon of viewer response as the forms which inspire them.
