EURO FUNDING BRINGS FASTEST SATELLITE BROADBAND TO CORNWALL BUSINESSES

PRESS RELEASE

Release Date: June 21, 2017

EURO FUNDING HELPS BRING UK'S FASTEST SATELLITE BROADBAND TO CORNWALL'S SMALL BUSINESSES

More than 1000 small businesses across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are in line to benefit from the arrival of the UK's fastest-ever satellite broadband service to the county.

A project supported by European Regional Development Funding is offering the 40Mbps superfast service to eligible businesses with free hardware and standard installation grants worth £1200.

For companies that qualify the three-year project offers superfast services with speeds of up to 40Mbps download and 6Mbps upload. A range of monthly data allowances from 25GB to 100GB are available to suit differing budgets.

Avonline Broadband, one of the UK's leading telecoms services companies, has teamed up with satellite provider Avanti Communications Group to bring the new service to the county.

Mark Wynn, managing director of Avonline Broadband said: "Businesses that currently cannot access superfast 30Mbps fibre or wireless broadband services are eligible. And from a practical perspective any business currently receiving less than 10Mbps is likely to benefit."

Other partners in the project include Cornwall Council's Superfast Cornwall initiative and the Government's Department of Communities and Local Government.

Research shows that of the 25,000 PAYE and VAT registered SME businesses in Cornwall, 3,000 have inadequate speeds of less than 4Mbps.

Mark Wynn said: "The premises being targeted by this programme are unlikely to get fibre broadband in the next 3-5 years, despite what they may have read. But we are offering a ‘fibre buy-back guarantee' available for any users that do get access to fibre within the term of their contract.

"For many small businesses in rural Cornwall superfast satellite broadband will be their only way of getting really fast reliable broadband in the immediate future. It provides a superfast service in rural areas where people have literally been waiting years for an upgrade. We can now deliver this service to any part of Cornwall with installation typically just a week or two from order."

Rather than use an underground copper/fibre network like BT, satellite broadband operates by sending and receiving a two-way broadband signal to a satellite about 22,000 miles in space. Because the satellite sits high up in space, it can provide equal quality of coverage to every home or business in the UK.

The new project runs in parallel with the new £9m Superfast Cornwall scheme to introduce more fibre and fixed wireless superfast broadband to the region.

Background information:

  • The Government has pledged that everyone in the country would have the legal right to a broadband connection of 10Mbps as part of the introduction of a new Universal Service Obligation (USO). However according to the Ofcom ‘Connected Nations 2015' report around 8% of UK homes - some 2.4m - are currently unable to receive speeds of 10Mbps or above. This increases to 48% - or 1.5m - in rural areas, where speeds are often affected by premises lying further from the network's local street cabinet or telephone exchange.

  • Avonline plc is one of the UK's leading telecoms services companies. Established in 1981, Avonline has built fibre networks to over 2 million UK premises and installed digital service into over 4 million UK homes and business

Since 2002, Avonline Broadband has pioneered the delivery of satellite broadband services across the UK and Europe. Working with Europe's leading satellite operators, Avonline offers a range of "next generation" Ka satellite technology and provides satellite broadband services to more UK homes and businesses than any other provider. Avonline Broadband is now part of the Satellite Solutions Worldwide group of companies.

  • Avanti Communications Group plc is a leading provider of satellite data communications services in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
