New Book: This Girl Ran - Tales of Party Girl Turned Triathlete

This Girl Ran(Published by Summerdale) is out on February 8th. It's a memoir by author and journalist Helen Croydon about ditching a glamorous, shallow, party life, toughening up through outdoor endurance challenges and two years later, qualifying to be an age-group Team GB triathlete.

"Four years ago I was a glamorous city girl who wouldn't even walk to the tube in the rain in case I ruined my hair. Two years later I'd qualified as a Team GB age-group triathlete and was fixing punctures in hailstorms."

Helen is available to write first person pieces, guest blogs, tips and advice on training for events (particularly cycling, swimming, running or triathlon), or for interviews and debates on any of the following topics:

  • Barriers which hold women back in sport (like fashion and the pressure to look good)

  • The recent surge in extreme endurance challenges

  • Anything to do with running, cycling and swimming

  • Social pressures to drink (Helen joined a sports club because all social contact involved booze)

  • The therapeutic effects of fitness

  • Toughening up to the great outdoors

Helen's story started when she joined a local running club (East London) because she needed something new in her social life that didn't involve drinking all the time. To a city type like her it was a steep learning curve. Going to a cross country race in a cold, muddy field on a Saturday felt as hardcore as going into combat in Helmand. At her first race she didn't even own a backpack so brought her kit in a designer beach bag.

But when she realised that she didn't die of an incurable skin condition by getting covered in mud, she wanted to do more. She took on ever-tougher challenges, each time surprising herself with what the human body and mind is capable of. Over two years her quest for endurance challenges grew.

Her story takes in a 120-mile cycle across the Peak District, two days of fell-running in the Isle of Wight, a 5km sea swim in choppy waters in the Aegean Sea, triathlons and half-marathons in some of the most scenic parts of the UK. Then, eventually to World Championships triathlon in Chicago to compete for Great Britain.
