A community fundraiser organised by Stafford and Rural Homes (SARH) customers has raised £500 for a local hospice.

The event at the SARH You First Independent Living Scheme in Hall Close, Stafford, was organised to raise money for Katharine House Hospice and featured a tombola, cake stall and table top sale.

It was also staged as a tribute to a friend and neighbour of the customers who organised the event, David James.

Until losing a brave fight against cancer last year, David organised regular coffee mornings at Hall Close and according to one of the organisers, Sue Boden, his memory helped to bring the community together.

"We thought this event would be a fitting tribute to him and gave us the opportunity to raise money for a cause that's very close to our hearts," Sue explained.

"More than 60 people came along on the day and we received fantastic support from local businesses who donated prizes for the tombola, including a free MOT from the garage in Silkmore and gift vouchers from the local fish and chip shop, the Butchers in West Way, Costa Coffee and a local taxi firm.

"I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the event that proved a great way to bring the community together."

The event at Hall Close took place during Community Impact Week, a National Housing Federation initiative that aims to highlight the positive influence housing associations have on the neighbourhoods they serve.

Carol Evans, a You First Independent Living Co-ordinator at SARH, added: "The fundraiser was a great way to start the week and a brilliant effort from SARH customers here at Hall Close who organised everything themselves. Well done to the team who organised everything from marketing to serving up refreshments on the day."
