Local business ‘Excels' in commitment to staff health and wellbeing

A local business is leading the way to a healthier lifestyle as it launches a health and wellness programme to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of its employees.

Boldon based contact centre EC Outsourcing launches the programme, named ‘Excel' on International Stress Day 2017 (1/11/2017), to help raise awareness of stress in the workplace and to combat the stigma attached to seeking help.

EC has appointed health advocates from each department, who have undergone corporate mental health training from qualified and accredited psychotherapist Glenda McIntosh. The training involved subject awareness and learning how to recognise the signs that someone might be suffering and techniques on how to manage and help the individual in the best way.

HR Manager at EC Outsourcing Nikki Welsh said: "Mental health conditions are all too often attached to a negative stigma resulting in far too many people suffering alone. Steps must be taken to break the culture of silence that surrounds mental health and as a business we're committed to making this change."

The company hopes that by talking and being open about mental health that they can help reduce the negative connotations associated to the subject and raise awareness of the importance of speaking out and seeking help.

Excel, will also focus on weight loss, healthy eating, quitting smoking and much more, in a bid to help EC's 270 staff lead a healthier lifestyle both in and out of the workplace.

Employees can expect a cycle to work scheme, free fruit at work, a lean eating meal delivery service, a weight loss group for those seeking to lose weight, discounted memberships at local gyms and more.

Nikki continues, "Our region doesn't have a great reputation for health management and more needs to be done by everyone in the community to help turn that around. We employ 270 staff, many under the age of 25, if we can help contribute to a heather mind and body for these people then that's something we're going to fully commit to."

As part of EC's commitment to healthier changes, the company has also enrolled on the North East Better Health at Work Award, which is coordinated by the Northern TUC and was formed to make the North East a healthier place by bringing health and wellbeing into the workplace.
