Yorkshire Wolds farmers shortlisted in rural business awards

A flourishing brewery, a bottling enterprise and a thriving wedding and events venue have resulted in a Yorkshire Wolds farming family reaching the final of an awards programme that celebrates rural Yorkshire.

T. Mellor & Son, based at Wold Newton based Hunmanby Grange has been shortlisted inThe Yorkshire PostRural Awards Diversification category.

Organised and hosted byThe Yorkshire Post, the awards showcase the success of rural businesses in the region.

Tom Mellor, who owns the 600-acre farm at Hunmanby Grange where the three businesses are based, first embarked upon diversification in 2003 when he established Wold Top Brewery with wife Gill to produce beer from their home grown barley and water from the farm's borehole.

Other businesses, Agricola Bottling Limited and Muddy Souls Events were launched in 2010 and 2013, respectively.

He said: "We're very pleased to have reached the final shortlist with our three farm diversification businesses.

"Our company ethos is to maximise our farming and geographical assets whilst sustaining the environment that is our home and to safeguard the farm for the fifth and subsequent generations.

"Growing our rural businesses has meant providing employment for local people and we're proud to be in the running for this award."

James Mitchinson, editor of The Yorkshire Post, said: "There is so much to celebrate and cherish about Yorkshire's countryside and the role of its resilient communities.

"From its world class landscapes managed by our farmers and landowners to attract and inspire millions of visitors every year, to the determination of families to eke out a living in ever more challenging circumstances, through these awards we want to shout about the exceptional qualities of rural Yorkshire from the rooftops."

The inaugural Yorkshire Post Rural Awards, sponsored by Bishop Burton College near Beverley, were launched to celebrate the vital role that the rural and agricultural community and farmers play in the economic success and profile of the region.

The winners from all 12 categories will be announced on Thursday, October 12, during a black-tie ceremony at Pavilions of Harrogate at the Great Yorkshire Showground that will be hosted byTV presenter Harry Gration.

Wold Top brews 5,600 gallons of beer a week and employs 18 members of staff.

Agricola Bottling provides a contract brewing service for small and medium-sized breweries nationwide.

Muddy Souls Events hosts weddings, festivals and corporate events at Hunmanby Grange and provides seasonal employment for 12 local people.
