Cardiff's newest secondary school opened its gates for the very first time earlier this month, as staff and pupils arrived for the start of term at Cardiff West Community High School in Ely.

The school will be temporarily located on the site of the former Michaelston Glyn Derw Federation, which closed in August, before moving to its £36m purpose-built permanent home on Pennally Road, Caerau.

The September 6 school launch is the culmination of months of hard work in preparation for Cardiff West Community High School's official opening.

Appointed as Headteacher designate in June 2016, Mr Martin Hulland, with Chair of Governors Dewi Jones, put the senior leadership team and recruited a full complement of staff ahead of this month's opening.

With strong involvement from the local community, a name, badge and uniform have all been chosen for the new school over the last few months.

Speaking on the first day of term, Mr Hulland said: "I am so pleased that the day has finally come when we can open the gates of Cardiff West Community High School and welcome our students through the door for the very first time.

"I am confident that together we will get off to a great start, and I am looking forward to working with the staff and local community. Plus we have the move to our fantastic, multi-million pound school next academic year to look forward to."

Plans for the new school, jointly funded by the local authority and Welsh Government through the 21st Century Schools programme, were approved in August and it is expected to open in early 2019.

Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council, and Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry said: "The new Cardiff West Community High School will bring further opportunities for the children and young people living in Caerau and Ely, in a modern and attractive learning environment fit for the 21st Century.

"Providing better education and skills for all is a priority for the council, and by giving the pupils the best facilities and best standards of teaching available, we can help them develop the right skills to succeed."
