Yorkshire smoked mayo voted among the best of regional products

A unique mayonnaise that has been tickling the taste buds of the region has reached the final of theYorkshire LifeFood and Drink Awards 2017.

Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil's Yorkshire Oak Smoked Mayonnaise has been shortlisted in the Food or Drink Product of the Year category in the prestigious annual awards.

Adam and Jennie Palmer, who farm and produce the rapeseed oil at North Breckenholme Farm, in Thixendale, near Malton, established Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil in 2008.

They collaborated with Staal Smokehouse to create an oak and applewood-smoked rapeseed oil which is used to make the mayonnaise.

Jennie Palmer is delighted with the news: "It's great to be nominated by the readers and judges for our smoked mayonnaise which we worked hard to create in terms of balancing the smoky notes with our fresh, nutty oil.

"It has been a long-term favourite with lots of the team here at Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil and it's nice to have been chosen by those we make it for - our customers - as a product that they feel is worthy of this title.

"We'd like to thank those who voted for us and we're looking forward to the awards event next month."

Esther Leach, Yorkshire Life editor, said: "We are committed to championing the wealth of talent in the growing and preparation of food and drink around the region where hospitality plays a huge part in welcoming the very many visitors whose spending helps to boost our economy and create jobs."

Over the past few months, Yorkshire Life readers had been voting for their favourite products and establishments and a panel of independent judges had been on the lookout for stand-out entrants.

The Palmers use their award-winning cold-pressed extra virgin rapeseed oil in their five strong mayonnaise range, and in all of their deli oils and dressings. Gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians, the condiment can be used to accompany meat, fish and cheese.

The collaboration between Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil and Staal Smokehouse came about when they decided to smoke the rapeseed oil after meeting at a local food event.

The results of theYorkshire Life Food and Drink Awards will be announced on Monday, September 25, during a ceremony at Rudding Park, Harrogate. Before the ceremony, attendees will sit down to a four-course lunch prepared using regional produce.

  3. Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil was established in 2008 when Adam and Jennie Palmer began cold-pressing their own oil seed rape and taking it to farmer's markets. They call North Breckenholme farm their home, situated on the edge of Yorkshire Wolds and on the outskirts of the North Yorkshire village Thixendale, close to Malton.

  4. The cold-pressed oil is extracted using a natural and chemical-free method, and is extra virgin as it is put through the presser just once. This means it retains all its taste, colour and health benefits, with a balance of omega 3, 6 and 9.
