Forty Years of Forklifts: Q&A with David Rowell

NEW HYSTER® 11T EMPTY CONTAINER HANDLER LIFTS TWO REEFERS WITH EASE

The new empty container handler from Hyster Europe provides double handling capabilities for any empty container type, even for 2 reefers with the refrigeration units on the same side. With an industry leading capacity of up to 11 tonnes, these new Hyster® trucks offer significant productivity advantages.

“These days, it is not uncommon for empty containers to exceed a tare weight of 5 tonnes, particularly reefers with wet floors”, says Elmer Dammers, Global Product Manager for Hyster® Big Trucks. “With many empty container operations relying on double handling for maximum productivity, it makes sense for them to operate equipment that can double handle any type of container with ease, without being selective.”

There is a total of nine new Empty Container Handler models in this new series for Hyster, including 4 single handlers up to 8 high (8’6”) and 5 double handlers up to 9 high (8’6”). “Single and double empty container handling continues to grow worldwide,” says Elmer. “Hyster® trucks have been market leaders for many years, and Hyster has been working closely with customers to refine and continually improve the products to help reduce the cost per container moved.”

With the total global container fleet growing, as well as the average size/weight of containers, Hyster developed its new Empty Container Handler range to again lead the way for customers. The newly designed reinforced spreaders feature CANbus controls and ‘reefer correction’ sideshift as standard, and there is a choice of several different container engagement systems, for fast handling of single or double containers of the most common types. The mast has also been redesigned to accommodate the heavier weights and offset loading, and for better performance and durability, with innovative features to lower stresses and increase the service life.

“Container handling companies are continuously pushed to strive for more efficiency, and reducing the cost per container move,” says Elmer. “The productivity often dropped when moving two reefers as they would have to be handled one-at-a-time, increasing the time and planning effort involved to process them.”

The new H11XM-ECD9 enables the operator to handle two 40ft reefer containers with ease, even when both refrigerator units are positioned at the same side, which would normally cause an offset load.

Customers with single-handling operations will benefit from highly rugged and durable equipment that is designed for double-handling capability.

For power and speed in every lift, the empty container handler features the same reliable and efficient Cummins Stage IV QSB 6.7 engine as in previous models. It also features innovative on-demand cooling and has various performance modes to suit the needs of the operation and to minimise fuel consumption.

“Also, this machine is equipped with an on-demand, load-sensing, hydraulic system that only draws engine power when required, offering low running costs,” advises Elmer.  It also allows the truck to be very quiet in operation, which adds to the ergonomic benefits to the driver. The operator has superb control approaching loads with smooth shifting and full-electronic inching thanks to the 5-speed forward / 3-speed reverse, hydrodynamic transmission by ZF. For a container handling truck, there is also excellent visibility in all directions and the spreader design helps operators see the twistlocks or hooks in every load position.

The truck features an optional cabin that tilts back 10° at higher lifts to make looking up easier, and a 1000mm / 40” raised cabin option for enhanced visibility when the container is at driving height.

The optional auto extend-retract feature further assists operators by adjusting the spreader to a 20ft or 40ft container size at the touch of a button. Additionally, operators can also be supported by smart camera systems.

“This new series is designed and built to perform and last in the toughest container yards, handling any type of container every day.”

Daily checks and servicing are completed with ease, with a minimum 500hr+ service interval and extended 10,000-hour service interval for the hydraulic oil (using regular oil sampling). The new empty container handlers can be customized to suit specific applications, and there are numerous options, such as double-line, automatic-greasing systems, which mean even less service effort and lower general component wear.

By introducing Hyster Tracker telematics, the trucks can also be managed more effectively to maximise uptime and productivity and minimise cost.
Supported by one of the best service networks worldwide, the new Hyster® Empty Container Handlers deliver an excellent return on investment and low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
