Ramadan Iftar community celebration

A second community celebration of Ramadan Iftar, the gathering to break the fast, will take place outside City Hall this Friday (June 23).

Following the success of last week's event, Councillor Ali Ahmed and members of the Muslim community have once again extended a warm welcome to everyone in Cardiff to join them for the celebration between 9pm and 10pm.

As part of Ramadan, Muslims fast during the day, breaking their fast with Ramadan Iftar each night at sundown, and it is customary to invite neighbours to share in the celebrations.

Friday's event is supported by Cardiff Council and co-ordinated with the Salvation Army and organisers are particularly keen for some of Cardiff's most vulnerable, including the homeless and refugees in the city, to enjoy a meal and be a part of Ramadan Iftar.

Cllr Ali Ahmed said: "We were delighted to share Ramadan Iftar with the community outside City Hall last Friday and were very pleased so many people joined us there. Ramadan is about sharing, caring, supporting and donating so once again we extend an invitation to anyone in the city to join us in the evening for food and friendship."

Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas, said: "This event was set up to help feed the homeless and to welcome refugees to our city. It is also open to anyone who wants to come along and take this opportunity to celebrate everything that binds our city and our communities together.

"I will be there on Friday and I hope those of you who can will join us in front of City Hall to celebrate the values we all share; love of family, friendship, being good neighbours, caring for others and understanding."

A welcome and short prayer will be given at 9pm, after which a rich selection of food prepared by the community will be served for all to enjoy.
