  • Used car of the month:Mazda CX-5

  • Used bike of the month:Ducati 1098

Mycarcheck.com's valuation experts reveal significant trends in the UK used vehicle market and choose a car and bike of the month.

Vehicle valuation manager at mycarcheck.com, Jon Wheeler, said:"With its large boot, comfortable ride and reputation for reliability, the Mazda CX-5 makes great sense as a used family car. Don't let the big 2.2 diesel engine put you off as Mazda's SkyActiv technology makes it surprisingly frugal. Check before you buy though because, of all the CX-5 models we checked last year, a higher than average percentage were either previously written-off or still on finance."

As to market trends,Wheelersaid: "Given recent tragedies, the general election and now a heatwave, thoughts of a new car haven't been a priority for most. That said, dealerships continue to report strong demand for good used cars. Shop around and, with a cheeky offer, there are bargains to be had."

On the motorbike, scooter and moped sector, mycarcheck.com's Mark Fieldsaid:"Summer's finally here so what better time to roll out one of the mosteagerly anticipated bikes of recenttimes, the Ducati 1098. Manufactured from 2007 to 2009, the successor to the 999 has more in common styling-wise with the 998. The single-sided swingarm and non-integrated exhaust pipes bring the classic Ducati look bang up to date. Producing160bhp and 92ft-lb of torque at 8,000rpm,the 1098isn't shy, isn't for the faint hearted and could easily be a futureclassic. 20% of those we checked last year were previously written-off and you can expectto pay up to £15,000 for a pristine example.

As to market trends,Fieldsaid: "A shortage of quality stock is stillstrangling the used motorbike market, largely due to the decline in new sales and the resulting lack of part exchanges. Demand for good used bikes remains strong though, and there are some positive signs: better weather, plenty of new Euro 4 bikes in dealerships and the Ride To Work Week initiative (running from 19 to 25 June) should all help to boost sales."
