GlosBiz celebrates 50th anniversaryof connecting business owners in Gloucestershire

GlosBiz is celebrating connecting businesses and business owners across Gloucestershire with its 50thanniversary meal at The Mayflower Restaurant in Cheltenham.

Tuesday 17thMay marks five years of networking breakfasts and lunches for business in Gloucestershire and the #GlosBiz hashtag on Twitter.

Adrian Malpass, an executive coach, sent out the #GlosBiz hashtag for the first time six years ago. The hashtag took off and resulted in the successful meet ups that happen on a monthly basis throughout the Cotswolds with alternate monthly sold-out breakfasts at Ellenborough Park and lunches at the Mayflower.

Adrian recalls the GlosBiz story: ‘One day in 2010 I simply typed the hashtag #GlosBiz in a tweet. It was hardly likely to be ground-breaking in the slightest; the term had just come about in my mind as a straightforward way of highlighting local business. My tweet went something like this, "If we all spend just £1 per week with a local #GlosBiz instead of a supermarket, imagine the difference it would make".'

Adrian then followed up with "Use the #GlosBiz tag to raise awareness of local business. Pls RT" and was surprised and delighted by the response: ‘What happened next was, in my view, just one of those ‘right place, right time' moments.'

Within hours the tag had spread across Gloucestershire and was being used by businesses of all sizes, customers of businesses, fans, even potential customers. Within 24 hours it had reached New York and was indexing on Google, and within 48 hours local PR people were picking it up, other Biz tags had been created for other areas across the UK, and the whole idea of a Biz tag to highlight local businesses had taken on a life of its own.

GlosBiz now reaches over 1.3million unique users every week, and is the leading local business tag in the region. The GlosBiz® entity connects over 9,000 businesses in the county, and reaches over 20,000 Gloucestershire business people. Adrian says it has become the best way to connect to/find other local businesses of all sizes.

With sold out breakfasts at Ellenborough Park and lunches at The Mayflower Restaurant, Adrian is continuing to move GlosBiz forward. He adds: ‘Having been up and running and connecting people for five years, GlosBiz is the go-to networking arena for many businesses in Gloucestershire. Friendships have been forged and business relationships have been made because of GlosBiz.'

Chun Kong, who owns and runs the Mayflower, is delighted to host the 50thanniversary event. He says: ‘I think the reason that the GlosBiz events have been so successful is a combination of Adrian's refreshingly relaxed approach, and our menu, which has great appeal! The events create a comfortable environment for new and established business folk to connect without barriers.

‘As a business owner for 35 years, not only have I always enjoyed the "Meet & Greet",  but, like many others, I thrive on engaging with fellow business owners and managers from all walks of life.

‘GlosBiz lunches at The Mayflower have filled a void in Cheltenham town centre by providing an enjoyable business lunch and a platform for many business owners to strike up a "business friendship" without any transaction taking place first. It's a safe and fun event to be part of!'
