Gavin Amos, head of valuation services at mycarcheck.com, said:"The headline finding in our new Making Better Used Car Choices report is that the percentage of vehicles checked with at least one serious warning increased from 25.6% in 2015 to 28.5% last year.Write-off, finance and stolen risks vary significantly from make to make and model to model, so it's important for buyers to make themselves aware of the issues associated with the specific vehicles they're looking at.

"For the second year running, our most searched model by quite some distance was the Ford Fiesta Zetec. A high 30.22% were previously written-off and an above average 13.39% were on finance, although this performance is mitigated by the very low average value of just £1,404, compared to a 2016 average of £8,125.Retaining its position as our second most popular model, the Mini Cooper was about average for write-off but much better than average for finance. Our third most searched model in 2016 was the Vauxhall Corsa Sxi, nudging the VW Golf GT Tdi down to fourth. The Corsa Sxi was about average for finance but worse for write-off.

"While the chances of buying a stolen vehicle are less than 1%, the consequences - being left massively out of pocket with no car to show for it - are disastrous, so it remains one of the key reasons to perform a provenance check."
