Tecna Display joins theRace for the Linewith award-winning activity stand at BETT 2017

Tecna Display recently worked with exhibition and modular display specialists Bell Stone Associates to create an outstanding stand design - recognised astheBest at BETT-for Bloodhound'sRace for the Lineproject at the Microsoft Education Activity Stand at BETT 2017.

Bloodhound, together with partners Microsoft and The Learning Partnership, is running the UK's largest STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) initiative. Over 100,000 students from across the UK are designing, building and racing model rocket cars as part of the national competition calledRace for the Line.

Bell Stone Associates was commissioned by Bloodhound to design and construct a functional and attractive stand for BETT 2017, which had to include a modular race track and promotional walls and advertising banners.

Visitors to the stand were able to get a taste of the competition with over 600 rocket cars built and raced through a tunnel. The velocity of each vehicle was tracked using onboard BBC micro:bit controllers which generate data the student can use to fine-tune the aerodynamic shape of their racing cars.

Oliver Bell, Managing Director of Bell Stone Associates, said: "The brief called for a package that could be easily installed while being stored and transported efficiently as it will be travelling to Dubai in April and then worldwide over the next two years.

"It also needed to be flexible enough to have the length of the track changed according the floor space and the stage of the competition. It also needed to look good and be stable and tough enough to withstand crowds of children."

Bell Stone used Tecna Display's UK manufactured modular display system, T3 Affinity, to create a variety of features.

The full stand was 15m x 3m with a modular race track and a promotional wall that served as a back drop. It took two members of the Bell Stone team just one day to build the entire stand - a fantastic feat considering the amount of design elements that were in play.

The race track was designed and built using the T3 Affinity system with modular sections providing the opportunity for the length of the track to be changed according to floor space and the stage of the competition. It had a variety of unique features such as a variety of work stations for the individual teams to work on their model cars, plus a pair of screens to display the race times and leader board updates.

The promotional back wall was designed and built using T3 Affinity system as well but in a different capacity. The combination between the T3 Affinity posts and beams meant that the back wall took up less floor space than other framework systems while remaining stable and without losing any display or design capabilities. The T3 Affinity framework was fitted with Velcro tape which allowed for the fabric graphics to be easily mounted on site but also meant that it can be easily changed without having to deconstruct the entire framework.

When asked why T3 Affinity was used for this project Oliver Bell explained: "It's a very robust system with a very quick set up time. This project had several design changes during production which would normally have been difficult for us to get completed with such a short lead time. But having the ability to cut and configure the posts and beams of the T3 Affinity components quickly at our factory meant a big deal. Also, the modularity and number of accessories of the system were very useful in adapting to the changing requirements."
