Bloom hearing specialists in Cullompton is actively supporting Tinnitus Awareness Week. The British Tinnitus Association (BTA), the UK's only dedicated national tinnitus charity, is urging members of the public and the medical profession to stand ‘Together for Tinnitus' in recognition of Tinnitus Awareness Week #TAW2017, set to take place from 6-12 February.

Bloom will be raising money for the charity during the week, as well as taking part in their Thunderclap on Friday 10 February - We are standing together for tinnitus #TAW2017. In addition, selected stores will have a therapist on hand to talk to patients to help them better understand their condition and how therapy could help them.

About 30% of people in the UK will experience tinnitus at some point in their lives but the number of people who live with persistent tinnitus is approximately 10%. Tinnitus is more common in people who have hearing loss or other ear problems, but it can also be found in people with normal hearing.

The aim of the week is to generate discussion about tinnitus and raise awareness of the work being carried out and support provided by the BTA and other services across the country. As a local specialist in hearing problems, bloom has many customers who have come to them suffering from tinnitus and along with the charity, they will be raising awareness about the condition and the treatment options available for this often distressing and debilitating condition.

Dave Jennings, Audiologist at bloom hearing specialists commented:

"Tinnitus affects people in very different ways. Some people find it moderately annoying with others finding it very troublesome. At bloom our hearing aids offer a ‘Zen' setting, which is a unique music program used as a distraction technique for the masking of tinnitus, which may significantly reduce a users' experience of the condition. We hope patients will come in and talk to us or call to arrange one of our specialists to visit them in their own home to find out more."

Sonia Kalia-Sagoo, Vibrational Sound Therapist added:

"Vibrational Sound therapy can help tinnitus sufferers by calming and balancing the nervous system, thereby providing immediate relief, as well as longer term assistance through the clearing and harmonizing of blocked energy within all systems of the body.

"Stressful life events, illness, or traumatic emotional times can all lead to energetic imbalance. Vibrational Sound therapy re-tunes the body with the use of tuning forks much like acupuncture without needles."

About the British Tinnitus Association

The British Tinnitus Association (BTA) is an independent charity which supports thousands of people who experience tinnitus and advises medical professionals from across the world.

The BTA is the primary source of support and information for people with tinnitus in the UK, facilitating an improved quality of life. They aim to encourage prevention through its educational programme and to seek effective treatment for tinnitus through a medical research programme.

The support the BTA offers to 335,000 people per year who are affected by tinnitus is reliant upon the generous donations of their supporters and fundraisers. They receive no government support and need to raise half a million pounds each year to continue their UK wide support. Donations can be made via www.tinnitus.org.uk

Not an illness or disease, tinnitus is a term that describes the sensation of hearing a noise in the absence of an external sound. The noise can have virtually any quality. Ringing, whistling, and buzzing are common, but more complex sounds may also be reported. Troublesome tinnitus can be very distressing for the affected individual, and issues may arise with sleep, concentration and mood. However, in many cases, subtle changes in people's environment can address these issues, and improve quality of life.

The experienced team at the BTA understands the impact that tinnitus can have on the lives of those who experience tinnitus and those who live with them, so seeks to provide the most appropriate and expert advice and information free of charge - via a confidential freephone helpline on 0800 018 0527 and online at www.tinnitus.org.uk. The BTA can also post printed and audio information and advice.
